It's the moment Dimitra Theodoridis has built her career around. As Director of Technical Service at Heartland Distribution, her first instruction is almost always the same—don't panic—and her job is to make sure owners never feel alone when something goes wrong. Q: What would you say is at the heart of what you do? A: We try to support our customers by empowering them. We want them to feel comfortable working on their own equipment. Sometimes local resources aren’t available. Not everyone thinks they can handle it, but we want them to understand that they absolutely can. Even if they’re limited with technical knowledge, we want them to feel comfortable handling it, because somebody has to. When I talk to new salon owners who know nothing about tanning, wellness, or sunless equipment, they kind of think it’s like anything else in their day-to-day lives—like with a car or refrigerator, you need to find a guy to fix it. I have to break the news to them that they are the guy who has to get behind and under and all up in that equipment. It may take some time, but eventually, a lot of customers who have really not wanted to do it are professionals at it now that we’ve supported them so many times over the years.
