As reported by Medical Xpress, vitamin D deficient patients saw a dramatic reduction in flare-ups from supplementation, while those with higher vitamin D status before the study experienced modestly reduced severity and duration of symptoms. A flare-up is experiencing intensified symptoms for an extended period that may require hospitalization.  \"Flare-ups of\u00a0chronic bronchitis\u00a0and emphysema (COPD) can be debilitating for patients, sometimes leading to hospitalisation and even death,\u201d lead author Adrian Marineau says. \u201cOur research has shown how an inexpensive vitamin supplement can significantly reduce the risk of flare-ups for patients who are vitamin D deficient, which could have a major public health benefit. Our findings suggest that patients with COPD should have their\u00a0vitamin\u00a0D status tested and should begin taking supplements if their levels are found to be low.\"  The study included 240 patients, half of whom were give vitamin D supplements and the other half equivalent placebo. This is the first trial of vitamin D\u2019s impact on severity and duration of COPD symptoms examine patients whose conditions range from mild to severe.
