Try to use positive reinforcement as much as possible and negative feedback only when absolutely necessary.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t stockpile negative feedback. <\/strong>Small doses of negative feedback are more effective and less likely to overwhelm employees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Never use feedback to vent.<\/strong> Venting a string of criticisms will only lead to resentment and passive resistance. Keep your cool and stay focused on the issue at hand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t email negative feedback.<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s like lobbing hand grenades over a wall,\u201d says electronic publishing guru Jonathon Seybold. \u201cEmail is more easily misconstrued, and when messages are copied, it brings other people into the fray.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start with an honest compliment.<\/strong> Doing so will start the conversation out on the right foot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uncover the root of the problem.<\/strong> Ask questions like \u201cWhy do you approach this situation in this was?\u201d or \u201cWhat was your thought process?\u201d to help you give better feedback and to help them discover their own solutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen before you speak. <\/strong>Your feedback will be better received if you show that you are listening and are understanding of the situation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask questions that drive self-evaluation.<\/strong> Help employees figure out how to correct a situation on their own by asking questions like \u201cHow could we have done better?\u201d and \u201cWhat do you think could use improvement?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coach the behaviors you would like to see. <\/strong>Feedback is useless without a model to do better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be willing to accept feedback, too.<\/strong> You should be willing to accept feedback as well as provide it.
