Originally from Long Island, it was Bruce&#8217;s PhD work at the University of California, Berkeley and job offer at the University of Washington that drew them to the Pacific Coast.<\/p>\n<p>One of their sons was friends with a founder of the Desert Sun salon chain. As he expressed his interest in the business, Laurie and Bruce saw a good opportunity.
