{"id":8162,"date":"2012-02-13T04:00:11","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T09:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smarttan.com\/news\/?p=8162"},"modified":"2012-02-12T17:48:11","modified_gmt":"2012-02-12T22:48:11","slug":"canadian-lawmaker-pushes-d-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.smarttan.com\/index.php\/canadian-lawmaker-pushes-d-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Lawmaker Pushes \u2018D\u2019 Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Canadian parliament member wants all of Canada officially to recognize one day a year as \u201cVitamin D Day\u201d and he\u2019s introduced a bill in the Canadian House of Commons to formally adopt the plan.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-8164\" href=\"https:\/\/smarttan.com\/news\/index.php\/canadian-lawmaker-pushes-d-day\/james-lunney\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8164 alignright\" title=\"James-Lunney\" src=\"https:\/\/smarttan.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/James-Lunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a>Dr. James Lunney, who represents central Vancouver Island in British Columbia in the Canadian parliament, wants all of Canada to know that vitamin D deficiency is a crisis in Canada that is costing lives as well as running up health care costs. &#8220;A National vitamin D day will further public knowledge, discussion and use of a cost effective personal health measure,&#8221; Lunney told Canada.com.<\/p>\n<p>According to Canada.com, Lunney cited a 2009 study published by The Annals of Epidemiology which states &#8220;raising the amount of vitamin D in North Americans would prevent approximately 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer each year, saving over $14 billion per year in Canada alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sunbed users in Canada have the highest vitamin D levels of any group, according to peer-reviewed research published in the journal Public Health in 2010.
