{"id":8908,"date":"2012-04-26T04:00:07","date_gmt":"2012-04-26T08:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smarttan.com\/news\/?p=8908"},"modified":"2012-04-26T10:41:18","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T14:41:18","slug":"did-mayo-derms-intend-to-mislead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.smarttan.com\/index.php\/did-mayo-derms-intend-to-mislead\/","title":{"rendered":"Did Mayo Derms Intend to Mislead?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A one-county study promoted by Mayo Clinic dermatologists in early April spawned headlines in the national news media suggesting that melanoma is increasing faster in women than it is in men \u2014 a false conclusion the study\u2019s own data didn\u2019t show, didn\u2019t even measure and one that conflicts with data from the nation\u2019s largest cancer registry.<\/p>\n<p>Melanoma is nearly twice as common in men and is increasing fastest in men over age 50 worldwide. So why no attempt to correct that mis-reporting?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the number of stories written about the Mayo study, and the fact that it appears Mayo has not attempted to correct the reports, one has to consider that it\u2019s possible the Mayo doctors intended to mislead the press,\u201d Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. \u201cAllowing the press to report that melanoma is more common in women than it is in men is totally irresponsible. Older men, who are decidedly the most at risk, are now being told that they aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayo\u2019s study \u2014 looking at data from Olmsted County, Minn., from 1970-2010 \u2014 reported that county\u2019s melanoma rates for 18-39 year-olds without even reporting rates for other age groups \u2014 an omission that makes it hard to explain how one could believe this paper showed that the increase was greatest in this age group. The conclusions the paper did report conflicted the National Cancer Institute\u2019s much-larger nationwide Cancer database. The National Cancer Institute\u2019s much-larger melanoma database shows two things conclusively:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> <strong>Melanoma incidence has increased more in men than in women since 1970.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Melanoma mortality has declined in women since the mid-1980s.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cThe Mayo doctors have attempted to say that the National Cancer Institute\u2019s database under-reports cases. It\u2019s amazing that the national media allowed this explanation,\u201d Levy said. Under-reporting cannot explain why NCI shows a different trend entirely. That\u2019s mathematically impossible.
