The World Health Organization has acknowledged that indoor workers — who get 3-9 times less UV exposure than their outdoor counterparts – get more melanomas.
It’s in writing on the World Health Organization’s web site in a statement that acknowledges that UV light’s relationship with melanoma skin cancer should not be described as straightforward – an error that many anti-tanning lobbying groups frequently make.

”Smart Tan has said for years that saying that UV exposure is dangerous and therefore should be avoided is like saying that water causes drowning and therefore you should avoid water,” Smart Tan Executive Director Joseph Levy said. “The professional indoor tanning industry has correctly represented that overexposure to UV may be harmful, but that it isn’t accurate to say any and all exposure is inherently bad.”
Smart Tan has produced a one-page document for members detailing this admission, which the non-profit Sunlight Institute has disputed with 23 research citations. Click here to get Smart Tan’s 1-page Action Document, “Melanoma Is More Common in Indoor Workers.”
