When Roy Adams was searching for commercial real estate to house his long-standing physical therapy practice, he never intended to get into tanning. But, when he stumbled upon a unique location in Portland, Ind., a twist of fate brought him to open Summer Breeze Tanning in 2001.
As a physical therapist for over 30 years, Roy was outgrowing his small office. But his first choice for relocation came with strings attached. Previously a video store and tanning salon, the building held several tanning units with outstanding balances. Roy couldn’t get the property without the beds, so he had to decide: walk away or begin a new venture?
“It’s just Roy’s personality to make the best of things. He is a happy, cheerful person who always goes the extra mile when he needs to,” says his salon manager, Heather Macke.
So, Roy decided to open Summer Breeze Tanning in the same building as Adams Physical Therapy. The businesses are aesthetically separated, but the shared space has created unique advantages and challenges for the staff.
