Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

Take advantage of this handy list of (free!) professional development resources compiled for Entrepreneur.com, which offers valuable information on a variety of topics that are helpful for nearly any type of employee, from sales consultant to CEO. Having the opportunity to improve professional skills always ranks high on factors of workplace satisfaction, and it obviously benefits the employer too, but most small businesses simply can’t afford to pay for classes or conferences for most workers. Check out these categories and see which could benefit different segments of employees in your business, then follow the link for the full list of resources:

1. Career development. Help employees gain skills that will lead to advancement in your business. Even if there’s not much room for advancement, offering learning opportunities will be attractive to the kind of self-motivated employees that you should look to hire. You still want the best workers possible, even if you know it’s likely to be short-term.

2. Communications development. Internal communication, external communication, verbal, non-verbal…communication is important for any job, period. Whether the goal is to improve relationships with customers, to become better a better motivator, or one of numerous other potential benefits, improving communication skills will always be worthwhile.

3. Technology skills development. Since technology is constantly evolving, continuous education on the subject is vital.

4. Leadership development. Of course managers need leadership training, but Entrepreneur.com contributor Heather H. Huhman says employers can benefit from shaping all employees to be leaders. Sixty percent of millennials hope to attain a senior leadership position within their current company, according to a poll.

5. Analytical skills development. Creative and innovative thinkers can be a huge asset to any company. Job-specific skills are obviously important, but those are more easily taught through routine training. An employee can have a great skill set, but without basic critical thinking ability, it probably won’t get them far.
