More Sunlight Related to Lower Melanoma Risk in New Study

Friday, May 15th, 2015

Less yearly sun exposure in European populations correlates significantly to an increase in melanoma risk, according to new research published in the journal Dermato-Endocrinology. The study’s authors also analyzed the overall increase in melanoma in Europe, point out many factors, including:

  • Melanoma in fair-skinned, indoor-working people is increasing around the world
  • Outdoor workers receive 3-10 times the annual UV doses that indoor worker receive, but have only 50% of the risk for contracting melanoma
  • The creation and use of sunscreens DID NOT [emphasis mine] reduce the incidence of the disease
  • Many melanomas occur on areas of the body where the sun never shines.
