Dr. Mercola on the Fight Against Sunbeds

Monday, April 18th, 2016

Natural health guru Dr. Joseph Mercola last week spoke out via his popular website against the federal government’s attacks on sunlight, tanning beds and his business.

After being accused of illegally promoting health benefits of the UV equipment he sold, Dr. Mercola agreed with the Federal Trade Commission to a financial settlement and to cease sales of his UV Systems. He says the agreement does however allow him to continue his primary objective of acting “firmly and boldly” as a health care advocate, regarding UV exposure and more.

“I choose to stop selling any products providing UV treatment because of my dedication to fully participate in the crucial debate over sunshine, Vitamin D, and UV therapy,” Mercola writes. “The average level of Vitamin D is dangerously low, most acutely with people of the darkest skin types.”

In defending his position, Dr. Mercola discusses the government’s coordinated attacks on UV light from all sources, misinterpretation of research on UV light and melanoma, the benefits of UV exposure that are often ignored, the short-sightedness of dermatology’s sun avoidance advice, and more.

Key points from the extensive article include:

“There’s a wealth of research showing the benefits of vitamin D. Nearly every vitamin D expert agrees the best source of vitamin D is the sun, but another source can be careful and limited use of UV beds.”

“There’s a difference between high-pressure UVA lamps and UVB lamps. The former is designed to darken your skin; the latter is designed to boost your vitamin D and provide other health benefits.”

“Advice to completely avoid UV light is dangerous because the impact can extend beyond deficiency in vitamin D.”
