American Suntanning Association — On October 7th, the American Suntanning Association will outline what can be expected from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed rules on indoor tanning. ASA has invested considerable resources to constructively work with the FDA by presenting scientific evidence to support a better plan for consumers and our market.
Recall, the FDA announced their proposed rules for indoor tanning in December of 2015. These rules included recommendations for exposure restrictions and annual limits, lamp and equipment standards, eyewear standards, consent form standards and a federal ban for those under 18. By the FDA’s March deadline, ASA had organized our industry leaders for a group response guided by scientific experts and FDA counsel, that resulted in a more than 300 page submission. ASA also implemented an industry drive that resulted in more than 10,000 industry submissions, and also encouraged members of Congress to send letters to the FDA on our behalf.
Since that time, ASA has organized and attended two separate meetings with the FDA to present scientific evidence that shows how the proposed rule changes could have adverse affects on the consumers the FDA is trying to protect. ASA has created an open dialogue with the FDA to continue to work constructively toward creating guidelines that are best for consumers and business owners alike.
The proposed rules that ASA and the industry are most concerned about are:
