Most kids have a specific vision of what they want to be when they grow up. A doctor. A writer. A teacher. And then there are the kids who have the entrepreneurial gene; and while they may not be able to paint a clear picture of the ‘what,’ they can go on and on about the ‘how.’ After all, the same skills and hard work go into any successful business, regardless of the industry. Right? Right!

At least this is the view of Jennifer Erd, who owns four Tanlines locations in Michigan and Ohio with her husband Joe. She knew at a very young age that she “wanted to own her own something.” And tanning, which has been a part of her life since age 13, just fell into place.

In 2005, Jennifer was working as a part-time tanning consultant. She loved it, and dreamed about opening her own place. As fate would have it, the owner was looking to sell but wanted to ensure the salons stayed in good hands. She approached Jennifer. The conversation started out about one store, but soon all three locations were on the table. This was it, Jennifer’s ‘something.’
