With slow season upon us, now is a good time to make sure all of your ducks are in a row. For most small salons like mine, you as the owner carry the weight of making sure everything gets done, from working most of the shifts yourself, handling salon operations and paying bills. But whether you are large or small, you need to have a staff to help carry the weight. I personally tend to cut back on employees this time of year to only 1-2 and then handle everything else on my own to save on overhead. This is a very common thing in our world, and that is fine. But make sure the help you do keep is capable of doing things without you as well.
Plan For The Unexpected
I am currently writing this as I sit in a hospital room next to my father. He woke up one morning with no feeling throughout his body and was rushed to the ER. I never expected that we would spend the next week in a hospital instead of the salon. But that is exactly what is happening. Thankfully I am prepared. In worst cases, if I personally ever was in a car crash or anything, I would not want the salon to suffer because I was not there. So I made a back-up plan! About 2 years ago I started a binder for how to run the salon without me. In it has detailed information on anything and everything.
