Sunburn Prevention: The Golden Rule of Smart Tanning

Tuesday, November 26th, 2024

Everything we do as indoor tanning professionals is based upon the underlying premise of sunburn prevention.

It’s a big part of the reason why all operators are trained in UV science, why we skin-type our clients, gradually acclimate them to increasing levels of UV with an exposure schedule, and why so many of our clients come to us to help them develop a base tan before their sunny vacations. And, in exceptional salons around the country, it’s why staffs are dedicated to teaching proper sunscreen use and sun habits outside of the salon too. When we do our jobs correctly, tanning facility owners and operators are at the forefront of proper skincare education, indoors and outdoors. It truly is your job to reduce the incidence of sunburn in your community!

Sunburn prevention is an important issue that needs to be addressed in every salon. Not only is it important to you, your clients, and your business, it’s also vital that everyone in the tanning community does their part in continuing to improve the reputation of the industry as a whole. It’s more important than ever that we, as professional tanning salon owners and operators, continue to show that we’re part of the solution, not the problem.

The importance of sunburn prevention is reflected throughout the Smart Tan UV Tanning and other certifications. Learning more about sunburn prevention will be beneficial for every tanner in your  salon, but is most important to apply for Skin Type 1s and 2s. It’s vital to know how to differentiate the two from each other and the other skin types, and how we can develop a repertoire to help the fairest skin type 2s slowly acclimate in order to develop a tan. Other important concepts include:

  • Practical examples of tanning regimens for fair skin type 2s
  • The real difference between a tan and a sunburn
  • Advanced Skin Typing to prevent sunburn
  • Immediate and delayed pigment darkening and what that means for exposure schedules
  • Reducing sunburn in your community.
  • Proper sunscreen use and sunburn prevention outdoors.
