Vitamin D Could Cut U.S. Healthcare Costs by $2 Trillion: Study

Thursday, March 6th, 2025

A groundbreaking study published in Clinical, Surgery and Medicine highlights how high-dose vitamin D3 supplementation could significantly reduce healthcare costs and disparities, particularly for African American and Hispanic patients.

Led by retired trauma surgeon and vitamin D expert Dr. Leslie Ray Matthews, the research found that correcting vitamin D3 deficiency in critically injured trauma patients can reduce hospital stays, cut costs, and lower mortality rates by 42%. Patients receiving high-dose supplementation saw hospital stays drop from 13.2 days to 6.3 days, while ICU costs were cut in half.

The findings suggest that vitamin D3 plays a crucial role in immune function, inflammation control, and recovery from serious conditions like heart attacks, pneumonia, and traumatic injuries. Dr. Matthews’ research estimates that widespread vitamin D3 sufficiency could reduce heart attack and stroke cases by 50%, potentially saving the healthcare system $2 trillion.

With 83% of healthcare disparities linked to vitamin D3 deficiency, these findings emphasize the need for better supplementation strategies to improve patient outcomes and reduce medical expenses nationwide.
