More than 6 out of 10 indoor tanning facilities say their first six months of 2010 were worse financially than the first six months of 2009, according to the results of a SmartTan.com poll conducted in early July.
Just less than a quarter of tanning facilities — 22 percent — said the first half of 2010 was better than 2009. Another 16 percent saw no change from 2009, and 62 percent said their financial performance this year was worse than 2009. The poll is not scientific, but it is the first such SmartTan.com poll to show a majority of the market reporting unfavorably results compared to the previous year.
“Since we have done these polls, the model has consistently been, more or less, that one-third reported improved earnings, one-third reported no change from the year before and one-third reported a decline,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. “It’s clear that the economy and other factors that have contributed to uncertainty in the market have created additional stress this year for many businesses. But at the same time there definitely are some businesses who are adapting to market conditions and are seeing increased business.”
