Heart Failure More Likely In
Women with ‘D’ Deficiency

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Another study published this week has linked vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk of heat failure — this time in Danish women low in ‘The Sunshine Vitamin.’

“Healthy women with vitamin D insufficiency have a significantly increased risk of adverse cardiovascular outcome,” Dr. Louise Schierbeck, of Hvidovre Hospital in Denmark, said in a report published this week by Bloomberg News.

The study, reviewed at the American Heart Association meeting this week in Orlando, followed 2,016 healthy women for 16 years. Those with vitamin D levels below 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/L) were 50 percent more likely to suffer heart failure, heart attacks, strokes or to die. Previous studies have found similar results in men.
