About five out of every eight tanning businesses say they have made major changes to their operations in the past 12 months, according to a SmartTan.com poll conducted in June — evidence that standing pat is not the status quo in the tanning business in 2012.
According to the poll, 62 percent of salons say they have made significant changes to their business in the past 12 months. Just 38 percent have not.
“Smart Tan believes we are on the cusp of the fifth generation of tanning businesses — that change in the market right now is separating winning businesses that will be around in the years to come from those that will not be competitive in the landscape of the market in coming years,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. “But it’s clear that most salon businesses are making moves — and a majority are contemplating or executing major moves.”
