Bad Business Habits to Break

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

If you didn’t get around to selecting a New Year’s resolution quite yet, consider kicking some or all of the behaviors listed in the article “5 Bad Habits That Are Harming Your Business” from Entrepreneur.com. It’s far too easy to fall into routines that could be limiting your productivity and success, without even noticing. If you recognize any of the following habits in your business, it’s time to make some changes!

  1. Failure to delegate. As much as many owners and operators would like to, you can’t do everything in your business. Focus solely on what you do best, invest in the proper personnel, give them tasks that match their expertise and try to avoid micromanaging.
  2. Bottlenecking decision-making. Forcing every single decision to pass through your office will slow your business down. That’s why it’s so important to invest in the right people and trust them to make appropriate choices.
  3. Being reactive instead of proactive. Don’t just make spur of the moment decisions – make sure every choice is a piece of a strategic plan to get your business to a specific goal.
  4. Engaging in unproductive activities. In today’s connected world, the worst of these are Facebook and email. Plan ahead for your social media time and try to limit checking your email. “[People think] they’re being productive and multitasking where in reality I believe that the whole idea of multitasking is unproductive,” says author TW Walker.
  5. Fear. Fear of failure, fear of making a decision, fear of upsetting others, etc. These all take time away from making important decisions and hinder productivity.
