Tammy Smeltzer of Bavero Beach Tanning
Stittsville, ON
Q: Do you think the super dark tanning trend of the 80s is coming back? Please explain.
A: I don’t see it coming back because the public was just not educated about the tanning process. People didn’t realize they couldn’t tan twice a day, or go to the tanner after being at the beach all day. The information just wasn’t out there back then, but I think the public is much more educated now. I think having a natural glow will always be popular. Being dark like Snooki though, I think there will always be people who want to be dark like that, but I don’t see it coming in full force.
Q: What are some of the things your salon has done to combat Sun Scare?
A: We preach moderation to our customers. That’s who we see everyday so that’s who we try our hardest to educate. I have sent emails to a counsellor trying to ban tanning, but he never replied and the issue eventually died down. I also spoke to Steve Gilroy about the email to the counsellor. I don’t fight with the media because that’s a hopeless battle. They thrive on sensationalism and that’s not the point I’m trying to get across. I think the best way to go about battling Sun Scare is by talking to those who can do something about it.
Q: What kind of events are you planning for Valentine’s Day?
A: We usually do candy and chocolates for the customers. We’ll put treats on the bed so they can have a little snack before they tan. We also offer gift certs and a bottle of lotion, package deals and gift bags.
