“They probably weren’t there yesterday when I was out cutting my grass, or when I was out riding my mountain bike.” — U.S. Rep. John Boehner, House Republican leader, responding on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” this week to questions about his suntan.

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked Boehner if his tan is a political problem, citing an ABC poll suggesting that 30 percent of people in Ohio think he spends too much time in the sun.

Of course, the flip of that — that 70 percent of people approve of Boehner spending time in the sun — is a much less interesting question. But it does show that a strong majority of people think Boehner’s tan is just fine.

“I have to note, if you do win, and you do become speaker, you’ll probably have the deepest tan of any speaker in American history,” Stephanopoulos said.

ABC did not ask Boehner what his vitamin D blood level is. Tanners, on average, have 90 percent higher vitamin D levels than the non-tanning population.
