I recently had an interesting conversation with one of my staff members. All my staff members are eligible to earn a bonus every month based on their sales statistics. The bonus amount can be substantial with some staffers earning in excess of $1,000 a month in bonus pay.
So obviously the better they sell, the more they can earn. To help them sell better and earn more, I had one of my best and most consistent staff members work with every salesperson one-on-one to find tune their selling skills. As I discussed a few weeks ago in Smart Tan Magazine, small tweaks and adjustments can create very big improvements.
One staff person who received this bonus training asked, “I already do pretty well making my bonus, why do I need this help?” In her defense, she is a very good staff person, and receives bonuses most months. But she completely missed the point. Just because she does make bonus money every month doesn’t mean that she couldn’t make more bonus money with a small adjustment here and there.
I asked her who she thought was the best and most successful golfer in the world right now. Not surprisingly she answered, “Tiger Woods.” I then asked her if she would be surprised to know that Tiger has used high-end coaches during his career to modify and improve his swing. After she thought about that for a few moments, she got it. Even the best can learn from a good coach or mentor. No one knows everything about everything.
