In a recent article, Dr. Shira Miller, M.D., Founder and Medical Director of The Integrative Center for Health, is cited as recommending tanning for vitamin D production.
“During the winter, in areas that are at least 40 degrees north of the equator, such as Portland, Oregon, Chicago and Boston, the sun’s UVB rays are filtered by the atmosphere and people are unable to produce vitamin D,” part of the article reads. “Miller suggests taking oral supplements and safely using tanning beds, which provide UVB.”
The article goes on to describe the variety of health problems associated with vitamin D deficiency and the importance of checking levels regularly. “According to Miller, people cannot tell on their own if they have low levels of vitamin D, which is why it’s important to obtain a blood test, no matter how much time is spent outside.”
Miller has long been an advocate of non-burning sun exposure and maintaining optimal vitamin D levels. She previously wrote a piece for her website, describing a vitamin D blood test as the “single most important blood test you should do, even if you think you are very healthy.” Click here for that article.
