Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Use tips from the article Small Business Computing article “4 Ways to Improve Internal Communication” to ensure that everyone in your salon, and the entire organization, is always on the same page. No matter the size of your workplace, leaders need to stay in touch with all employees in order to keep them engaged and informed and head off any potential issues. Strong communication is particularly vital for businesses with multiple locations that strive to maintain consistency. Use these tactics to keep every everyone (including the boss) in the know:

  1. All-hands Meetings. Hold an occasional meeting with all employees, wherever they may be. Utilize Skype or other online meeting tools if necessary. It’s important to not only instruct employees, but to allow time for them to voice their questions and thoughts. And remember to have a little fun! Incorporating games, prizes and creative presentations can really boost participation and engagement.
  2. Company Email Newsletter. Particularly in the case of a multiple-location company, publish a monthly internal company newsletter with general updates and news, as well as specific updates from each location. This is also a good channel for highlighting employees for strong performance.
  3. Get Out (of the office). A company lunch or outing is a great way to remove the “barriers” that exist within the workplace. Getting everyone into a different environment and doing something fun can help elicit different kinds of feedback than you get in a typical meeting.
  4. Open Your Door. A leader having an open door, literally and figuratively, sends an import signal to the team. By being approachable and transparent, you’ll make employees feel valued and you’ll get far better feedback.
