Lessons to Learn by Tracking Your Time

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Figure out how to get the most out of your workday by answering the questions posed in the Inc.com article “5 Things I learned From Tracking My Time for a Month.” If you’re not consciously tracking your daily activities, you’re surely not using your time as effectively as possible. Give it a shot, and answer these questions:

  1. What am I doing too much of? It may be something vital, like checking and sending emails, that you can reduce or something superfluous, like checking Facebook, that you can completely cut out. Either way, you’ll probably be amazed by how much time can be saved by modifying one activity.
  2. What’s taking longer than I thought? There are always those tasks that seem quick and easy, but end up getting dragged out. Try to identify these activities, and then ask yourself if the return warrants the time invested.
  3. What could I hand off? If you’re spending too much time on something that a less valuable (in terms of salary) employee can easily handle, pass it down the line so you can focus on what really matters.
  4. What has the biggest impact? Here’s where the time you save should be focused. Identify the activities that only you can accomplish and have the biggest impact on the bottom line, and try to free up as much time as possible for those responsibilities.
  5. What am I not doing enough of? With a crammed schedule, you probably already know there are some tasks that you aren’t getting around to. Once you’ve rid yourself of unnecessary activities, set time to accomplish these things.
