Adding to previous literature linking low vitamin D, asthma and other lung issues, new research shows that the more severe a person’s asthma, the more likely they are to be vitamin D deficient.
Measuring the vitamin D levels of 121 asthmatic adults, the study found that 91 percent of those that were deficient suffered from severe asthma, and just 50 percent of those with sufficient levels had severe asthma.
Those with higher vitamin D levels also had better lung function, as measured by forced expiratory volume in 1 sec, the researchers found.
“We demonstrated that vitamin D insufficiency is frequent in asthmatic adults and that it is predictive of the risk of severe asthma,” the researchers wrote. “We suggest a randomized clinical trial to determine whether supplementation with vitamin D can reduce or modify asthma severity in adults.”
