Before joining the New Sunshine team in 2008, Josh Malloch got a lot of experience from his position as the director of operations for a 46-location video store  chain. He networked with many individuals in the tanning industry and was drawn to the simultaneously fun and challenging environment. Six years later, he’s New Sunshine’s sunless sales representative, loving the greener side of the grass as he travels across the country, visiting salons to help them grow their sunless business.

Q: What are some of the new skin care advances that California Tan is incorporating into their products?

A: CC crème is quickly becoming popular for salons and their customers. It’s showing up in more lotions, but we have incorporated it into a sunless tanning solution as well: Complexion Perfecting Complex. Customers have a hard time knowing which solution they need to provide a natural shade for their skin tone, but whether you’re fair or dark, this solution is a great option for everyone. the color-perfecting complex works on all skin tones by using all seven natural colorants — not just bronze or red and violet.

The other advancement we are incorporating into Complexion Perfecting Complex is a longer shelf life. Instead of buying five gallons of solution that expire somewhere between 90 days and six months from now, this solution lasts 12 months. Before, salons would store their solution during slower months, only to find that the DHA had started to break down and just didn’t give the same results. This is especially great for salons that don’t have a lot of volume in the summer. Sunless can be confusing on its own so we wanted to make it as simplified as possible.

We also take into account other trends that can help us enhance the beauty of out product and tanners. Bright colors, more complex fragrances and lightweight formulas are all important right now in our market. This year we started using avocado because it is such a trendy ingredient right now. We always strive for a higher level of skin care first, and tanning second in our lotions.
