Mastering Your Membership Message: Selling EFTs with confidence

Friday, October 2nd, 2026

Recurring memberships are the heartbeat of a strong tanning business, but only if your staff knows how to sell them with purpose and authenticity. But for many front desk staff, membership sales can feel awkward or pushy. That’s why training is essential.

A confident membership pitch is about believing in the value of what you’re offering and helping clients see it too. Here’s how to build a confident, effective, and natural approach to selling memberships:

  1. Teach the Why—Not Just the What

Don’t train your team to recite prices and perks. Train them to understand why memberships matter—to the salon and to the client. For the salon: steady income, better forecasting, client loyalty. For the client: more value, consistency, better results, fewer decisions.

  • “When you make wellness part of your routine, the results really add up. Our memberships are designed to make that easy and affordable.”
  • “You’ll see better results and save more in the long run when you commit to regular sessions—and that’s exactly what our membership is built for.”
  • “Think of it like a gym membership—but for your skin, mood, and energy.”
  • “Memberships take the guesswork out of your routine. You can focus on feeling your best without stressing over individual costs.”
  • “We created our memberships to help clients stay consistent, save money, and see the full benefits of what we offer.”
  1. Make It Part of the Conversation—Not a Sales Pitch

Selling works best when it sounds like helping. Teach staff to look for natural entry points, like:

  • A new client enjoying their first visit
  • A regular client paying per session
  • A client asking about how often they should tan
  • Someone purchasing a multi-session package
  • A tanner who isn’t using other services
  • A red light or sauna user returning consistently without a plan
  • A seasonal client coming back after time away

Use open-ended questions:

  • “Are you planning to come in a few times this month?”
  • “Did you know we have a plan that could save you money and give you priority access?”
  • “What’s your tanning goal—glow for an event or maintain all year?”
  • “Do you think you’ll be using red light as part of your weekly routine?”
  • “Would it be helpful to have unlimited access instead of paying each time?”
  • “Are you mostly here for the skin benefits, the mood boost, or a little of both?”
  • “Would you like me to walk you through how our memberships work?”

Let the client talk themselves into it with your gentle guidance.

  1. Offer Easy Comparisons

Use simple visuals or statements to show the value clearly:

  • “If you come in even twice a week, this pays for itself.”
  • “It’s like paying for 2 tans and getting 6 more.”
  • “Here’s what you’re spending now—and what you’d save on EFT.”
  • “One red light session is $X, but unlimited for the month is only $Y.”
  • “Most members come in at least 6 times a month, so they save money and stay consistent.”

Confidence comes from simplicity. If staff can explain it in 15 seconds or less, they’ll use it more often.

  1. Overcome Objections with Empathy

Common objections like “I don’t come in enough” or “I don’t want to be locked in” can be addressed with flexibility and reassurance.

Coach your staff to respond:

  • “That makes sense. We also have a freeze option—so you only pay when you’re using it.”
  • “Even if you only come in 4 times a month, you’re saving money and locking in a lower rate.”
  • “There’s no long-term contract—you can cancel or pause anytime.”
  • “If you sign up now, your price will never go up as long as you stay active.”

Remind clients that memberships are customizable and client-friendly—not rigid commitments.

  1. Celebrate the Sign-Up

Membership sales should feel like a win—for the client and the employee. Use incentives, track conversion rates, and give shoutouts during staff meetings.

Also, train staff on what happens next so the client has a great onboarding experience: welcome packet, app login, service guide, etc. The smoother the follow-through, the more confident your team will feel recommending it.

The best membership sales happen when your team believes in the product, understands the value, and talks to clients like real people, not like sales targets. With the right training and mindset, EFTs become less of a pitch and more of a benefit.
