Although they’re still a little green around the edges, the team at Magic Tan is already doing right by the indoor tanning industry. Lyne Renaud is proof that you don’t have to have 10 stores or even five years in business to make a difference. By implementing Smart Tan standards and provincial regulations, she’s already making a great reputation with her customers and health unit representatives:

The legislation has not presented us with any challenges – honestly it’s not affecting me at all. I guess that’s because we were doing what we were supposed to before the legislation even passed. We are all about doing things the right way. Even though we can no longer allow customers under the age of 18 to tan, we have an older clientele so it didn’t affect us much at all.

We printed the necessary signage and put it up in the salon, and when the representative from the health unit came in, she said we were in 100 per cent compliance, and mentioned that was rare to see. We don’t just stop at what’s required of us though: We explain the rules of tanning and skin typing with materials in each room. I do these things not just because of legislation, but because I want customers to have good results.

I think that little has changed since the legislation went into effect, and people have even more confidence in what we do because they know they can rely on us to make the right choices for them. We always want to make sure they aren’t overdoing it and that they are on a schedule that’s right for them.

Our ability to succeed and be unaffected by legislation also has a lot to do with our education. We are Smart Tan Certified, so our customers know that we are going to take care of them. I think that if everyone in the industry was required to be certified, this transition would be a lot easier for people and the industry.
