Sharon and Richard Reyes might be the last people you’d expect to own a tanning salon: The couple met while on base for the Navy. But between their disciplined military backgrounds and a litte nudge from the universe, the couple took over Ingrid’s Suntanning of Palo Alto, Cali. and hasn’t looked back since.

Sharon came from a family of three sisters, but instead of going the college route like the rest of them, she followed in the footsteps of her parents, who met during their time in the Navy. Little did she know she’s meet her own husband, Richard, the same way. Richard joined the Navy as a stepping stone into law enforcement.

After fulfilling their obligations to the Navy, Sharon and Richard moved to California. Sharon loved basking in the sunshine, and thought working part-time at Ingrid’s Suntanning might be a good way to make money. Over the years, her part-time job developed into a demanding manager position. In 1995, Sharon and Richard obtained ownership of the salon.

“I liked being there and had always wanted my own business. I am a very hands-on person,” says Sharon.

They decided to keep the salon’s name, but just like her decision to join the military, Sharon wanted to do things her way. After years of managing the location, the transition to owner was smooth. This confidence allowed her to be very hands-on in order to shape customer service and the overall experience of the salon.
