Most Tanners Know About Eye Protection: Survey

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Cheri Cosgrove of Tanworld has conducted and released the results of a survey examining tanners’ knowledge of eye protection. The survey asked participants about their knowledge of UV exposure and long term eye damage, if they used eye protection during exposure to sunlight and if they used protection during indoor tanning sessions.

In regards to tanners’ knowledge of UV exposure and eye damage, almost all respondents (96%) knew that unprotected UV exposure can lead to long term damage of the eyes. 92% of those surveyed agreed that they always use eye protection when tanning indoors and 72% stated they use protection when exposed to UV from the sun.eyewear

Cosgrove attributed these results to the extensive training her employees receive, “We teach all employees the eye protection requirement and that all customers (be made) aware of the long term opportunity for eye damage that could result from not using proper eyewear.” In fact 85% of clients have purchased their own personal FDA compliant eyewear from Tanworld, and the remaining 15% have access to FDA compliant disposable eyewear.

“The media and many anti-tanning factions suggest that most tanners are not using eyewear and they are promoting the need for more aggressive labeling to make indoor tanners more aware of eye protection when exposed to UV. We felt that this was inaccurate and wanted to survey our customers to find the truth,” stated Cosgrove.

Having properly trained employees is crucial because they are the first (and sometimes only) line of contact with customers. Cosgrove’s training of employees on the knowledge and use of proper eyewear fits perfectly with Smart Tan’s philosophy of always using eye protection.
