Healthy, young adults saw improvements in upper and lower body strength from vitamin D supplementation in a 2014 study.
Research has consistently shows that vitamin D benefits muscles by increasing the size of muscle fibers as well as the rate of protein production, according to the Vitamin D Council. The new study, published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, provides further evidence, showing a significant increase in muscle strength in both lower and upper limbs from vitamin D supplement over periods of time ranging from 4 weeks to 6 months.
Through an extensive inclusion and elimination process, researchers selected seven controlled trials that met their criteria, with data from a total of 310 healthy, athletic and non-athletic adults between ages 18 and 40.
“This review has found that vitamin D3 supplementation improves upper and lower limb muscle strength in a healthy, adult, athletic and non-athletic population between the ages of 18 and 40,” the researchers concluded.
