With the U.S. federal 10 percent luxury tax on indoor tanning services set to take effect Thursday, a rally planned by Nebraska tanning facilities on the state capital steps there is starting to garner national interest.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman and former Omaha Mayor Hal Daub are set to address a rally Thursday morning at the state capital in Lincoln, Neb., calling for U.S. Congressional leaders to repeal the 10 percent excise tax — slipped into Health Care Reform legislation this year in a last minute deal between U.S. Sen. Harry Reid and lobbyists for the cosmetic dermatology and Botox industry.
The rally, set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday on the day the tax is to take effect, was the subject of a large story Friday in the Omaha World-Herald and may be attracting national attention. The 10 percent luxury tax on tanning will be the first actual piece of the Health Care Reform act to take effect since the bill was passed earlier this year and as such is likely to garner national news.
Nebraska tanning facilities this year formed the Nebraska Indoor Tanning Association, which has planned the rally. Several hundred attendees are expected, including tanning leaders from around the country.
