Vitamin D content would be required to be listed on nutritional labels for food under a proposal from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that acknowledges the sunshine vitamin’s impact on chronic disease.
Vitamin D and Potassium would be required on labels because some in the U.S. population aren’t getting enough of these nutrients, putting them at increased risk of chronic disease, according to a news release from the FDA. The proposal would also revise the Daily Value for Vitamin D.
“For 20 years consumers have come to rely on the iconic nutrition label to help them make healthier food choices,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D in a news release. “To remain relevant, the FDA’s newly proposed Nutrition Facts label incorporates the latest in nutrition science as more has been learned about the connection between what we eat and the development of serious chronic diseases impacting millions of Americans.”
The FDA will accept public comment on the matter for 90 days before any changes are made.
