“Much has recently been made of the 12 per cent reduction in breast cancer risk delivered by pain meds like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. Reducing inflammation is of course vital to reducing breast cancer risk, but we have plenty of natural low-risk ways of doing that-and of reducing our risk by much more than 12 per cent. A relatively small decrease in risk delivered by drugs known to be toxic when used long term isn’t really something major to celebrate.

“Arguing, as some have, that scientists should focus on finding anti-inflammatory drugs with diminished toxicity is like arguing we need to find a system of unregulated capitalism with diminished toxicity-what we really need is a new approach. A new approach would include honest information about the “wisdom” of our wear-your-sunscreen mantra-the highly recommended sunscreen ingredients benzophenone and avobenzone have effects that are similar to those of DDT, Dioxin, DES and PCBs. They’re endocrine disruptors, meaning they mess with our hormones, and benzophenone has been shown to foster excellent growth of breast cancer cells in lab studies. Moderation-enough sun to get badly-needed cancer-preventing vitamin D-is what we did for many, many years before breast and skin cancers started their little party.”
