Quote of the Week:
Restrict Lunches, Not Tanning

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

“They are going to ban tanning indoors but there is no one policing beaches saying to young children that they have been outside for more than a half an hour so they should go inside. They are the ones getting burned.” — Shannon Whipple, co-owner of Sundaze Tanning in Norwalk, as quoted in the Danbury (Conn.) News-Times. Connecticut is one of several states considering legislation to prohibit tanning for clients under 18 years of age.

Whipple told the News-Times she is concerned the proposal would infringe on parental rights. Whipple doesn’t feel comfortable with the government telling her what her kids cannot do, especially when it comes to tanning.

Whipple said that if legislators are so concerned with health and wellness of teenagers, they should dedicate their time to nutrition at schools. “School cafeterias serve garbage every day,” Whipple said. “Every day, there are french fries at lunch, soda vending machines and school lunches are so unhealthy.”
