Mainstream medicine indeed has it all wrong, the writer concludes after analyzing the types of research on sun and health the tanning industry has been talking about for years, in an article from national publication Outside Magazine.
“As for me, I’ve made my choice,” he writes. “A world of healthy outdoor adventure beckons—if not half naked, then reasonably close. Starting today, I’m stepping into the light.”
Outside contributing editor Rowan Jacobson considered controversial studies from researchers like Dr. Richard Weller and Pelle Lindqvist, as well as the opinions of some dermatologists with more traditional views on sun exposure.
“It’s entirely intuitive,” Weller told Jacobson. “Homo sapiens have been around for 200,000 years. Until the industrial revolution, we lived outside. How did we get through the Neolithic Era without sunscreen? Actually, perfectly well. What’s counterintuitive is that dermatologists run around saying, ‘Don’t go outside, you might die.’”
