An Australian professor organizing a new vitamin D study advises readers to expose more skin to sun for less time to optimize vitamin D production, in an article from The Daily Mail.
“Even if it’s only for 2-3 minutes each day, it will be enough to get that source of vitamin D,” Professor Rachel Neale told The Daily Mail. “Exposing more skin in a short period of time is better than less skin in the long run. Go outside and lift your shirt or pants up – show your tummy and legs.”
Neale is coordinating a study to gauge the impact of vitamin D supplementation on diagnosis of cancer, heart disease, and infections. She previously examined the relationship between sun exposure and cancers, finding that high UV exposure was related to a 30 percent reduced risk of ovarian cancer and 40 percent reduced risk of esophageal cancer, and that those with sun-sensitive skin had 47 percent less risk of pancreatic cancer, according to The Daily Mail.
She says that there is not currently sufficient evidence to suggest that vitamin D supplements will have the same impact as sun exposure.
