South Dakota Rejects New Tanning Rules

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

2011-02-02 South Dakota copyState lawmakers in South Dakota rejected a proposal Monday that would have required tanning facilities to require parental consent before under-18 clients could use sunbeds — a practice salons told a state senate committee they already do without the state’s involvement.

The bill — debated before the South Dakota Senate Health & Human Services Committee — failed by a 5-2 vote. The Indoor Tanning Association and local salon owners testified against the bill, which was being pushed by several state medical societies.

“In opposing the bill, Yankton Republican Jean Hunhoff said she thought parents, not the state, need to take more responsibility,” the Associated Press reported.
