Dozens of news sources in the past week have reported that the Affordable Care Act’s 10 percent excise tax on tanning services is responsible for the closure of approximately 10,000 indoor tanning businesses. These closures are not only affecting the economy, but removing consumer options for natural vitamin D production, natural health advocate Natural News points out.
“Obamacare advocates say that the tan tax was meant to discourage a practice that many say increases the risk of skin cancer, even though studies show the benefits of tanning on increased vitamin D levels and treatment of some medical conditions like Crohn’s disease,” Natural News’s J.D. Heyes writes.
Along with limiting consumer access to tanning service, 81,000 tanning jobs have been lost due as a direct result of the “Tan Tax,” industry experts say. However, Republicans have pledged to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act if Donald Trump is elected this November. Adding additional promise, a bill to repeal the ‘Tan Tax’, with the support of the American Suntanning Association, has already been passed by Congress and did not take effect only because it wasn’t signed into law by President Barack Obama. That’s part of the reason many in the industry are hopeful for the future.
“When I go to vote, I’m supporting candidates who are pro-business and who want less government involvement, less government regulation,” the article quotes Chris Sternberg, senior vice president of Sun Tan City.
You can learn more about continued efforts to repeal the ‘Tan Tax’ at the American Suntanning Association Open Board Meeting, Oct. 7 at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel, in conjunction with the Smart Tan Nashville trade show and educational conference.
