The controversial 10 percent tax on indoor tanning sessions included in Congress’ Health Care bill still must clear a process called “Reconciliation” in the U.S. Senate – a step where senators can once again alter objectionable parts of the bill.

Although the U.S. House of Representatives voted Sunday to pass the health care reform bill, amendments added to the bill by the House must now be voted on by the Senate. Smart Tan is supporting the Indoor Tanning Association’s efforts to lobby against The Tan Tax.

The reconciliation process almost always leads to changes in a bill. According to NBC News, Republicans plan to point out all the back-room deals on the bill. The worst and most tangible back-room deal is The Tan Tax — put in the bill at midnight on a Saturday after lobbying from the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology Association and the manufacturer of Botox — which put the Tan Tax in the bill to replace a tax on Botox and elective cosmetic surgery.

“Republicans hope to force major changes to the reconciliation bill, some that could set up a political nightmare scenario for Democrats. If certain unpopular provisions of the Senate’s version of the bill — like special carve-out deals for individual states — are not corrected, Democrats risk being branded as supporters of back-room deals. And if Republicans manage to scuttle reconciliation language that would delay the implementation of new taxes on high-value insurance plans, union groups who were counting on the fix will be incensed.
