In my 10 or so years in our industry, I’ve often wished that there was some sort of quick guide. Not just a conventional “how to” book, but a “how not to do it” guide. Maybe this would have prevented me from making every mistake possible in my search for the perfect set of industry practices and systems. I’d like to think that it would, but who knows — there is a lot to learn, and I’m pretty sure I’m due for more.

Mistakes are a lot like injuries or wounds. Some are minor; some are major. Some are mortal; some are self inflicted. The good news is that the majority can be prevented or walked away from when made, costing only time and cash. But this is only the case if you own your mistakes. If you don’t, you will have learned nothing. The definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different results. When things go wrong, learn from it!

Here are a few of the biggest mistakes that take down some of the “newbies” in our business.
