TODAY’S HEADLINE STORY: Holistic health leader calls for regular sun exposure

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Dr. Joseph Mercola — whose web site is one of the best-read health information web sites in the world — this week called for the public to once again embrace regular sun exposure as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Mercola’s headline message: “Goodbye Cancer, Hello Sun Exposure?”

2008-08-21-mercola-copy.jpg“Do you avoid the sun at all costs because you heard its rays will give you cancer? Are you worried about how much sun you receive – and what it’s doing to your body?” Mercola asked on his web site. “If you said ‘yes’, you are among the millions of Americans who have been told to avoid the sun whenever possible. But in this month’s Inner Circle monthly interview, you’ll discover why you actually need sunlight (and its vitamin D producing rays) to be optimally healthy. You’ll also discover how much sunlight you need, the best ways to get it, and why avoiding the sun may be doing your body more harm than good.”

Mercola, promoting a recent 2-hour interview he did with Vitamin D expert Dr. William Grant, sent that message out this week to his site’s registered users. A 5-minute segment of the interview is available on the site.

According to, in the full interview Mercola and Grant discuss:

  • There’s a specific amount of vitamin D you need daily to cut your cancer risk by 50%. What is this amount — and do you know how much you’re getting?
  • What melanin is — and why it’s so important to maintaining your healthy skin and your healthy body.
  • The most important source of vitamin D for 90% of Americans (Hint: It’s not milk).
  • Discover why where you live may be increasing your risk of cancer.

“It’s great that more and more health education leaders are realizing that there is no substitute for regular UV exposure,” Smart Tan Vice President Joseph Levy said. “This is one more example of how those of us who embrace tanning in a non-burning fashion are right on track.”
