Try These Innovative Interviewing Techniques

Thursday, October 10th, 2013

Check out some interviewing strategies that are a little more unconventional from the CIO Insight article “Eight Great Job-Interviewing Techniques.” Asking the same old questions will more than likely get you the same old answers and the same old results. Get a better read on your prospects with these methods:

  1. Take a seat. Make the candidate wait near some employees for 10-15 minutes and see how they interact with their potential future colleagues.
  2. Observation Station. If they’ve gone through a previous round of interviewing, ask for their impressions of their earlier interviewer. You’ll learn a little about how perceptive and honest the candidate is.
  3. Inquiring minds. Consider how inquisitive the candidate is. Do they ask questions about you and the job? Do they try to identify shared values and common interests?
  4. Leisure pursuits. Find out what they do in their time off. Do they seek competitive activities? Creative ones?
  5. Trophy case. Ask candidates if they’ve ever won a contest and what they had to do to earn it.
  6. Clear thinking. Ask some vague questions to gauge how they go about clarifying and seeking details before responding.
  7. Total recall. To test their listening skill and comprehension, ask them to summarize something you explained earlier in the interview.
  8. Prior experience. Directly relevant experience is obviously important, but also find out things like where their first job was in order to gain some insight on their work ethic.
