A recent study highlights the importance of maintaining adequate vitamin D levels throughout life, beginning at an early age.
The research from the University of Massachusetts Medical School identifies a relationship between higher vitamin D and better cholesterol markers in 8-year-old children, the Vitamin D Council reports. Higher vitamin D levels correlated significantly with lower non-HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol/HDL ratio, and LDL cholesterol.
While artery health is something that many don’t consider until later in life, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) actually begins during childhood, according to Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council.
“This study highlights that if vitamin D does indeed prevent cardiovascular disease, it may start very early in life,” Cannell writes. “This could be the case for many conditions. That is why it’s important to get enough vitamin D throughout the lifespan”
