The warmest March on record helped jump-start the tanning season, helping nearly two-thirds of of salons, according to a SmartTan.com poll conducted this month.

According to the poll, 64 percent say the warm late-winter/early-spring weather helped boost tanning sales this year. About one-third — 36 percent — said the weather has not helped. The poll is not scientific.

According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, March 2012 was the warmest March on record. And the first three months of 2012 were the warmest January-to-March period on record for the lower 48 U.S. States.

Most of Canada also experienced a record-warm March, with only southwestern British Columbia experiencing near-average spring temperatures.
