2010-07-07 UK needs more sun exposure copyA major cancer charity in the United Kingdom is planning to reverse years of absolutist sun scare messaging and embrace some level of mid-day sun exposure to reverse epidemic-level vitamin D deficiency, the London newspaper The Independent reported this week.

“The newspaper cited a confidential report from Cancer Research U.K., which revealed the charity was reconsidering its advice about avoiding the sun between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. The charity was responding to concerns that people were at risk of a lack of vitamin D without adequate exposure to sunlight,” Fox News reported in a web article Tuesday.

British vitamin D/sunlight advocate Oliver Gillie wrote an essay in The Independent on Monday. “Lack of sunshine and the vitamin it makes in our skin is probably the most serious single cause of disease in the UK today,” Gillie wrote.
